Groundbreakers: The story of oilfield technology and the people who made it happen

An interesting new book has been published by Henry Edmundson "Groundbreakers: The story of oilfield technology and the people who made it happen". There is a website here: www.history-oil-gas.com which describes it as:

"Groundbreakers" describes an amazing technical journey in man’s effort to find and produce oil and gas, with more than 450 pages and 130 illustrations. This is the first ever, comprehensive history of how upstream oil and gas technology developed. The story is packed with human drama, extraordinary innovation and oversized personalities who dared to dream. By any standards, the story is unmatched for the sheer physical and intellectual bravado of its key players.
The book relies on interviews with more than 125 technical leaders in the upstream oil and gas industry and an exhaustive review of geoscience and petroleum literature and patents since the mid-19th century. In addition, the book features timelines for exploration, drilling, reservoir engineering and production engineering innovations. There are copious endnotes and references, including an index of the key players.

Paperback, 476 pages, published in 2015 by Fast-Print Publishing, ISBN: 9781784561871

Price: £24.99, €29.95, $39.95

I have found it on Amazon HERE. (not an affilliate link sadly!)
Ridgefield: Demolition nears end

A sad end to a storied (hah!) facility:

"Asbestos, mercury, PCBs, and “other hazardous materials” found in buildings at Ridgefield’s former Schlumberger property during demolition have been removed and shipped to approved disposal sites and contractors in Ohio, Michigan, and the Connecticut town of East Windsor."

and

"Buildings that the demolition project will leave standing are the Philip Johnson building — which the town is investigating as a possible site for a Maurice Sendak museum — as well as the adjacent auditorium, and the thick-walled “sky dome building” where a linear accelerator was once operated.

The cost to the town of the demolition has gone from an original $818,100 to an adjusted total of $1,190,801, according to Town Engineer Charles Fisher."

Happy New Year - 2017

UPDATE: This is a resend of the end of year newsletter to a subset of memebrs with Schlumberger email addresses. In the last year Slb stopped supporting email addresses with subdomains such as @kuwait.oilfield.slb.com - and it seems everyone now has @slb.com addresses. We have trauncated the subdomains from everyone who still lists an old style email address and are resending to see who bounces. Sorry if you got this twice!

I have been procrastinating all year in sending out this newsletter. I only send one a year so there was never a hard deadline, until today: December 30th!

In the process I have failed to notify you all of an impending ALLIANCE Schlumberger reunion (see next) which will be held in Myanmar in January, which I hope to attend.

2016 has been the second year of low oil prices, low activity and massive layoffs across the oil & gas industry. To those of you still depending on the industry for either your salary or your pension, I wish higher oil prices and to all our members I wish a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2017.

rgds,
Ewan

Alliance Reunion Myanmar Jan 2017

The South-East Asia chapter of ALLIANCE Schlumberger is hosting its second reunion - in Myanmar from 22-25 January. I apologise for the late notice if this is the first you have heard of it, but you might still be able to join if you act today!

This is the latest message from the team:

New Segments (Finally!)

When I built this site (back in 2001) Schlumberger as a group had not changed dramatically since I left in 1996 and when we extended beyond Wireline to all company product lines the structure that was created at that time was relevant to the majority of the members joining, many of whom had also left the company in preceding years.

However as the years have passed I have received louder and louder complaints - that the segments we offer do not match the structure of the company today (inevitable) or that we offer no support for members from some of the new segments created by acquisitions or reorganisation (less forgiveable).

Last year I bit the bullet and renamed all the segments to better match the current company structure, while also adding many new segments. The current list looks like this (preceded by Brothers member count):

Note that half our members give no primary segment at all (although many of those list Assignmenst to particular segments).

However I quickly had a complaint from Katya Strinka complaining that all the formerly "Dowell" people were lumped into Completions. This turned out to be a surprisingly complex issue. The original Dowell Schlumberger included packers (abandoned), test tools (merged into flopetrol), coiled tubing (which went to WIS) and of course cementing (WIT) and related pumping services such as frac, stim & sand control (WPS). There was no simple way to put people into the correct current segment based on their previous designation as Dowell.

After a long discussion I reassigned everyone from Completions to Well Services, knowing that this will probably upset other people. The only solution is for everyone to update their profile and make sure they are in the segment they consider the "Primary" segment of their career. This does not affect the segment recorded against individual assignments, although for our ex Dowell members those are also currently all set to Well Services.

My apologies for any confusion - and I would not be surprised to find that there are now other people who are wrongly assigned, so let me know!

Alliance Schlumberger Reunion Bali

Alliance Schlumberger organised their first reunion outside of Europe here in Bali in October 2015. Attendance was lower than hoped for at 15 participants plus partners but a good time was had by all and lots of good ideas were discussed for the next gathering. You can read a full report on the event here.

The 2016 Alliance Reunion will be held in Aix-en-Provence, France 18 - 21 September. Details of the reunion hotel and tours programme are in a document 'Hotel and Programme Information' available on the Downloads page of their website www.allianceschlumberger.org or you can just click here to access it!

Massive Downsizing In Oil Sector Brings Acute Pain For The Holidays

So dated it is seasonal again now but it was interesting to see Robin Ewan (a namesake of mine no less!) featured in this Q4 2015 article from NPR:

"Take Robin Ewan, who, for more than 30 years, worked as a test engineer for Schlumberger, a global oilfield service company. Not anymore.

"This is the first time around Christmas that I've been laid off, and it has a bit of an effect, because now, you know, you're wondering who to buy presents for and what presents. You're going to make it more meaningful ones than expensive ones," he says.

Ewan started working for Schlumberger in Aberdeen, Scotland, and spent the past 20 years based in Texas. In February, he had to rush home to the U.K. to say goodbye to his dying mother. The day after he returned, he was told he no longer had a job.

"Basically, I've been doing odd jobs for people here and there — electronic-related stuff, fixing computers, fixing cars, whatever. But as for looking for a real job, I basically haven't tried because I know there's so many people in my situation in this town that are in the same boat," he says."
